Conflict does not require everyone to attend

Family conflict can involve siblings, adult children, parents, in-laws or caring responsibilities. Disagreements about money, expectations, contact or boundaries may continue even when people care deeply about one another. Individual therapy can help you explore your own responses without asking the whole family to join.

Identifying what is within your control

You may not be able to change a relative's behaviour, but you can consider how you respond, what contact feels manageable and which conversations you want to have. For example, you might prepare to decline a request, decide how to share caring duties or agree on a time to revisit a difficult subject.

Boundaries without a script

A boundary is not a guarantee that someone else will behave differently. Therapy can help you think through what you will do if a request is repeated or a conversation becomes heated. It may also help you recognise when distancing yourself is safer than trying again.

Choosing individual or family therapy

Family therapy involves additional questions about who participates, consent and confidentiality. Individual therapy may be a better starting point if other relatives are unwilling to attend. Where there is abuse or coercion, safety and specialist advice take priority over mediated conversations.

Choosing an independent therapist

Read each therapist’s profile and ask about relevant experience, professional registration, confidentiality, online session arrangements and fees. A listed specialism is not a guarantee of particular clinical training or suitability. You can ask questions before booking, and the therapist should explain when a different service may be more appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone need to attend therapy?

No. Individual therapy may help even when others do not participate.

Can therapy help adult siblings?

Yes. Adult family relationships can be explored in individual or family work.

Will a therapist decide who is right?

The aim is usually to understand patterns and choices, not assign a winner.

What if one relative refuses?

You can work on your own responses and boundaries.

Can therapy help me set boundaries with relatives?

Yes. For example, you could plan how to decline a request, decide what contact feels manageable, or prepare to discuss caring responsibilities. Other relatives do not need to attend.

Is conflict always a sign of a harmful family?

No. Disagreement is common, though persistent conflict can be distressing.

What if someone is abusive?

Safety should be assessed before any joint sessions; specialist support may be needed.
