Understanding Autism
Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that can affect communication, sensory processing and patterns of experience. It is not a mental illness, although mental health difficulties can coexist.
Signs and everyday experiences
Some autistic people experience sensory overload, social exhaustion, difficulty with unexpected change or anxiety; experiences and support needs vary widely.
What can contribute?
A mismatch between a person’s needs and their environment, discrimination or lack of adjustments can contribute to distress.
How talking therapy may help
An autism-informed therapist may adapt communication, session structure and sensory demands while supporting the person’s own goals. Therapy should not aim to suppress harmless autistic traits for conformity.
What might sessions involve?
Someone who finds open-ended questions difficult might agree a written agenda and predictable structure for sessions.
Choosing the right support
On Veyro you can compare independent therapists who list Autism as a specialism. Check their experience, training, approach, availability and fees. A specialism badge does not establish competence in every specialist intervention.
Formal autism assessment is separate from general counselling; ask about the practitioner’s role and qualifications.
Further reading and related support
Read NHS information on autism. You may also find our adhd therapy page and stress therapy page helpful. Therapy does not replace emergency, medical or specialist services when those are needed.

Frequently asked questions

No. Autism is not an illness to be cured. Therapy may help with co-occurring distress or personally chosen goals.
Is autism therapy the same as an assessment?
No. A formal diagnostic assessment is a separate process delivered by appropriately qualified services.
Can therapy be adapted for sensory needs?
Yes. Discuss lighting, communication, pacing, breaks and online-session preferences.
Do all autistic people need therapy?
No. Therapy is a personal choice based on needs and goals.
Can an autistic adult have anxiety as well?
Yes. Co-occurring mental health difficulties may benefit from appropriately adapted support.
Should I ask about autism experience?
Yes. Check relevant training, experience and willingness to make reasonable adjustments.
Can online therapy be suitable?
It can suit some people, depending on privacy, communication preferences and clinical needs.
