After discovering or disclosing infidelity

Infidelity can disrupt trust, routine and a sense of what was shared in a relationship. People may feel grief, anger, shame, numbness or a strong need for answers. The person who was unfaithful and the person affected may need different kinds of support. There is no universal timetable for deciding what happens next.

Individual or joint sessions?

Individual counselling can help you work through feelings and decide what you want before inviting anyone else. Joint therapy may be useful when both partners can participate safely and voluntarily. Ask how a therapist handles private disclosures, confidentiality and competing goals before starting together.

Questions worth exploring

You might discuss what information you need, which boundaries matter now, how to manage difficult conversations or what rebuilding trust would require in practice. Therapy should not pressure you either to forgive or to separate. If there is intimidation or coercive control, individual specialist support may be safer than couples work.

Moving forward at your own pace

Some people choose to repair a relationship; others choose to end it or remain undecided. Therapy can help you make sense of uncertainty without promising reconciliation. When comparing therapists, look for relevant relationship experience and ask how they work with infidelity and emotional safety.

Choosing an independent therapist

Read each therapist’s profile and ask about relevant experience, professional registration, confidentiality, online session arrangements and fees. A listed specialism is not a guarantee of particular clinical training or suitability. You can ask questions before booking, and the therapist should explain when a different service may be more appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Can therapy help after an affair?

It can help people explore trust, communication and their options.

Do both partners have to attend?

No. Individual therapy can be useful too.

Will the therapist take sides?

A relationship therapist should aim for a fair, safe process rather than a predetermined outcome.

Does counselling mean we must stay together?

No. Some people use therapy to decide whether to separate.

Can I attend if I was unfaithful?

Yes. You can explore responsibility, emotions and choices without assuming a particular outcome.

How long does rebuilding trust take?

There is no fixed timeline, and rebuilding trust is not always possible or desired.

What if there is abuse in the relationship?

Safety comes first; joint therapy may not be appropriate where abuse or coercion is present.
