Understanding trauma
Trauma can refer to the psychological impact of events or experiences that felt threatening or overwhelming. Responses differ widely and do not automatically mean someone has PTSD.
Signs and everyday experiences
Unwanted memories, heightened alertness, avoidance, sleep disruption or difficulty trusting others may occur. Some people feel numb rather than visibly distressed.
What can contribute?
Experiences, available support, previous adversity and ongoing safety can all shape how someone responds.
How talking therapy may help
A therapist may begin with safety, stabilisation and practical coping before exploring memories. Trauma-focused CBT and EMDR are evidence-based options for some diagnosed trauma-related conditions, but are not appropriate for everyone.
What might sessions involve?
Someone who feels overwhelmed when hearing a particular sound might first work on grounding and a plan for responding to triggers.
Choosing the right support
Veyro lets you compare independent therapists who list Trauma as a specialism. Check each profile for training, experience, approach, availability and fees. A specialism label alone does not confirm training in every specialist treatment.
If abuse or danger is ongoing, prioritise immediate safety and specialist support; therapy is not a substitute for protection.

Frequently asked questions
Does experiencing trauma mean I have PTSD?
No. Many people experience trauma-related distress without meeting criteria for PTSD. A qualified professional can assess persistent symptoms.
Will I have to describe everything that happened?
No. You can discuss boundaries, pacing and consent. A therapist should not pressure you into detailed disclosure.
What is trauma-informed therapy?
It emphasises safety, choice, collaboration and awareness of how traumatic experiences may affect you.
Is EMDR suitable for everyone?
No. Suitability depends on assessment, the difficulties being treated and the practitioner’s training.
Can online therapy help after trauma?
It can be suitable for some people, provided privacy, safety and clinical needs can be managed appropriately.
What if I am still unsafe?
Seek immediate safety and appropriate specialist or emergency support. A therapist can discuss safe next steps.
How do I choose a trauma therapist?
Ask about relevant training, experience, approach, safeguarding and how they manage distress during sessions.
