When drinking becomes a concern

Drinking can put your health or relationships at risk even if you are not dependent on alcohol. Dependence can include withdrawal symptoms when you cut down. If that happens, get medical advice before changing how much you drink. Alcohol concerns range from drinking more than intended to physical dependence. You may notice cravings, arguments, secrecy or using alcohol to cope with stress. A counsellor can help you explore the role drinking plays without judgement.

What counselling can offer

Therapy may focus on triggers, feelings, routines and relationships. It can support motivation and planning, but counselling alone is not a substitute for medical assessment, detoxification or specialist addiction treatment when those are needed.

Withdrawal and medical safety

If you get shaking, sweating, sickness or other withdrawal symptoms when you reduce alcohol, seek medical advice before trying to stop. Suddenly stopping alcohol can be dangerous if you are dependent, and severe withdrawal can be an emergency.

Choosing appropriate support

You can ask therapists about their experience with alcohol problems and whether they work alongside GP or specialist services. Support can also address the effect of another person’s drinking on your own wellbeing.

Finding a therapist and next steps

Compare independent therapists’ profiles, relevant experience, session formats and fees before booking. You can ask about suitability and confidentiality in an initial conversation. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 999. For urgent non-emergency medical concerns, contact your GP or local urgent-care service; in Northern Ireland, use your GP out-of-hours service when your surgery is closed. For topic-specific guidance, see the relevant NHS information.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to stop drinking before counselling?

Not necessarily, but tell the professional about your drinking and any withdrawal symptoms so they can discuss safe, appropriate support.

Can I stop drinking suddenly?

If you are alcohol dependent, sudden withdrawal can be dangerous. Seek medical or specialist advice before reducing or stopping.

What if I drink mainly to manage stress?

Counselling may help you explore stress, emotions and other coping options, alongside assessment of your alcohol use.

Can therapy replace detox?

No. Medically assisted withdrawal and treatment for dependence require appropriately qualified medical or specialist services.

Do I need an alcohol-use disorder diagnosis?

No diagnosis is needed to ask for help with drinking-related concerns.

Can I get support for someone else’s drinking?

Yes. Therapy may help you explore boundaries, safety and the impact on your own wellbeing.

When is alcohol withdrawal an emergency?

Seizures, severe confusion or hallucinations after reducing alcohol need emergency medical help; call 999.
