Understanding Bullying
Bullying involves harmful behaviour that can be repeated or sustained, including in schools, workplaces and online. It can affect people of any age.
Signs and everyday experiences
People may feel anxious, isolated, ashamed or reluctant to attend school or work. Some experience sleep problems or changes in mood.
What can contribute?
Power imbalances, social environments and a lack of effective intervention can allow bullying to continue. Responsibility lies with those engaging in harmful behaviour, not the person targeted.
How talking therapy may help
Therapy may help someone process experiences, rebuild confidence and plan boundaries or support-seeking. Practical safeguarding, school or workplace action may also be essential.
What might sessions involve?
Someone receiving hostile messages might identify trusted people, save relevant evidence safely and plan how to seek help.
Choosing the right support
On Veyro you can compare independent therapists who list Bullying as a specialism. Check their experience, training, approach, availability and fees. A specialism badge does not establish competence in every specialist intervention.
If there are threats, violence, abuse or immediate danger, prioritise appropriate safeguarding and emergency support.
Further reading and related support
Read NHS information on talking therapies. You may also find our school anxiety therapy page and workplace stress therapy page helpful. Therapy does not replace emergency, medical or specialist services when those are needed.

Frequently asked questions
Is bullying my fault?
No. The responsibility for bullying lies with the person or people behaving harmfully.
Can therapy stop the bullying?
Therapy may support your wellbeing but cannot replace action by schools, employers or relevant authorities.
What if bullying happens online?
Keep safe records where appropriate, use platform reporting tools and seek support from trusted people.
Can children access support?
Yes, with appropriate safeguarding, consent and a practitioner qualified to work with young people.
Should I report workplace bullying?
Consider relevant workplace policies, HR, union or independent advice while assessing your safety.
Can bullying lead to anxiety or depression?
It can contribute to distress, but an assessment is needed to understand any ongoing symptoms.
How do I choose a therapist?
Ask about experience with bullying, trauma-informed practice and safeguarding.
