Understanding School Anxiety
School anxiety describes distress linked to school or attendance; it is not a diagnosis in itself. It may overlap with anxiety conditions, bullying, unmet support needs or other difficulties.
Signs and everyday experiences
A young person may have stomach aches, trouble sleeping, worry before school, avoidance or distress at drop-off. Physical symptoms deserve appropriate medical attention too.
What can contribute?
Peer relationships, learning differences, transitions, sensory needs, bullying and pressures at home or school may play a role.
How talking therapy may help
Age-appropriate support can help a young person express worries and build coping strategies, while parents and school staff address practical barriers. Therapists should work within their competence and safeguarding responsibilities.
What might sessions involve?
A child worried about the school gate might work with adults on a predictable arrival plan and a trusted point of contact.
Choosing the right support
On Veyro you can compare independent therapists who list School Anxiety as a specialism. Check their experience, training, approach, availability and fees. A specialism badge does not establish competence in every specialist intervention.
If bullying, abuse or immediate safety concerns are present, these need active safeguarding responses; therapy alone cannot fix an unsafe environment.

Frequently asked questions
Is school anxiety a formal diagnosis?
No. It describes a difficulty that can have several causes and may need further assessment.
Should I force my child to attend school?
Work with the school and relevant professionals on a safe, individual plan rather than relying only on pressure.
Can bullying cause school anxiety?
Yes. Bullying or feeling unsafe can contribute and requires direct action by responsible adults.
Can therapy help parents as well?
Yes. Parents may benefit from guidance on communication and supporting the child.
What if my child has ADHD or autism?
Consider whether school adjustments or additional assessments and support are needed.
Do we need a GP appointment?
Consider GP advice if symptoms persist, worsen or include concerning physical or mental health signs.
How do I choose a therapist?
Look for appropriate qualifications, experience with young people, consent processes and safeguarding policies.
