When conversations keep going wrong

You may begin a conversation hoping to be understood, only to end up arguing, withdrawing or feeling unheard. Therapy for relationship communication difficulties explores the patterns around those moments rather than treating one person as the problem. Communication difficulties can arise in partnerships, families and other close relationships.

A practical example

Suppose you ask for help with household responsibilities and your partner hears criticism. You become more insistent; they shut down; neither of you feels heard. A therapist may help you notice the sequence, identify what you wanted to say and practise a different opening or response. Progress is not measured by never disagreeing.

Different styles and needs

People vary in processing time, directness, emotional expression and preferred ways of communicating. Neurodivergent people may have particular preferences, but there is no single neurodivergent communication style. You can ask whether a therapist adapts sessions to your needs, such as allowing pauses or written reflections.

When communication tips are not enough

If one person uses threats, monitoring or intimidation, the issue is not simply poor communication. Joint sessions or advice to be more open may be unsafe. Seek individual specialist support where coercion or abuse is involved.

Choosing an independent therapist

Read each therapist’s profile and ask about relevant experience, professional registration, confidentiality, online session arrangements and fees. A listed specialism is not a guarantee of particular clinical training or suitability. You can ask questions before booking, and the therapist should explain when a different service may be more appropriate.
