Eating disorders need appropriate assessment
Eating disorders can involve restriction, bingeing, purging, distress about food or other patterns that affect physical and emotional health. They can be serious at any body size. If eating-related symptoms are affecting your wellbeing, speak to a GP promptly; a general counselling appointment should not delay assessment or referral.
Why specialist care matters
Treatment may require medical monitoring, nutritional expertise and evidence-based psychological care coordinated by an eating-disorder service. The right pathway depends on the condition and level of risk. NICE eating-disorder recommendations explain assessment and treatment options.
Where therapy fits
Psychological support can address fear, shame, relationships and patterns around eating, but not every therapist is trained to treat an eating disorder. Ask directly about relevant training, specialist supervision, referral arrangements and how they coordinate with medical services. A directory label alone does not establish treatment competence.
When to seek urgent help
If you are fainting, experiencing chest pain, severe weakness or other worrying physical symptoms, seek urgent medical assessment. Do not wait for an online therapy slot. Recovery is not measured by appearance, and treatment should not be framed as a weight-loss programme.
Choosing an independent therapist
Read each therapist’s profile and ask about relevant experience, professional registration, confidentiality, online session arrangements and fees. A listed specialism is not a guarantee of particular clinical training or suitability. You can ask questions before booking, and the therapist should explain when a different service may be more appropriate.

For urgent medical help that is not an emergency, contact your GP or local urgent-care service. In Northern Ireland, contact your GP out-of-hours service when your surgery is closed.
