Emotional changes during pregnancy
Emotions during pregnancy can change alongside sleep, physical symptoms, relationships and expectations. You might be coping with anxiety about birth, previous loss, difficult family conversations or pressure to feel happy all the time.
What counselling can help with
Counselling may help you put feelings into words, explore boundaries and consider practical support. It should not replace midwifery, obstetric care or treatment for perinatal mental-health conditions.
Making space for difficult conversations
For example, you might want to talk about how a previous difficult experience affects your confidence, or how to explain your needs to a partner. A therapist can help you prepare for conversations without telling you which birth or medical decisions to make.
Perinatal and urgent support
If low mood or anxiety is persistent, tell your midwife or GP; they can discuss perinatal mental-health support. If you experience thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, or other urgent symptoms, seek urgent professional help.
Related support
Depending on your situation, our pages on postnatal and fertility may also be helpful.
Finding a therapist and next steps
Compare independent therapists’ profiles, relevant experience, session formats and fees before booking. You can ask about suitability and confidentiality in an initial conversation. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 999. For urgent non-emergency medical concerns, contact your GP or local urgent-care service; in Northern Ireland, use your GP out-of-hours service when your surgery is closed. For topic-specific guidance, see the relevant NHS information.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to feel anxious during pregnancy?
Many people experience worry, but persistent or overwhelming anxiety deserves support from your midwife or GP.
Can I talk about a previous pregnancy loss?
Yes. You can discuss grief and its effect on your current pregnancy at your own pace.
Does counselling replace my midwife?
No. Counselling addresses emotional wellbeing and should complement maternity and medical care.
Can my partner attend?
Ask whether the therapist offers joint sessions and whether that suits your goals.
What if I do not feel excited?
There is no single correct emotional response to pregnancy. You can discuss mixed feelings without judgement.
Can therapy help with fear of childbirth?
It may help you explore fears; your maternity team can also discuss birth-related support and options.
When should I contact my midwife or GP?
Tell your midwife or GP if anxiety or low mood persists, worsens or is making daily life difficult. If you need urgent mental-health help, contact your maternity team or local urgent mental-health service now. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999.
