Understanding Complex PTSD

Complex PTSD is a trauma-related condition involving PTSD symptoms alongside difficulties such as emotional regulation, self-concept and relationships. Assessment should be carried out by a suitably qualified clinician.

Signs and everyday experiences

You may experience intrusive memories, avoidance, heightened threat awareness, shame, emotional overwhelm or relationship difficulties. These signs alone do not establish a diagnosis.

What can contribute?

Repeated interpersonal trauma can be relevant, but experiences and diagnoses vary. Current safety and support matter as much as past history.

How talking therapy may help

A qualified clinician can assess needs and discuss trauma-focused treatments, pacing and support for emotional and relational difficulties. Treatment planning should reflect safety, preferences and any additional conditions.

What might sessions involve?

Someone who becomes overwhelmed after an unexpected reminder might work first on a practical grounding plan before deciding how to approach trauma memories.

Choosing the right support

On Veyro you can compare independent therapists who list Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) as a specialism. Check their experience, training, approach, availability and fees. A specialism badge does not establish competence in every specialist intervention.

If you are in danger or experiencing abuse, seek specialist safety support. If symptoms are severe or worsening, consult a GP or appropriate mental health service.

Frequently asked questions

Is complex PTSD the same as PTSD?

They are related but not identical; complex PTSD also involves difficulties in areas such as emotional regulation and relationships.

Can a therapist diagnose complex PTSD?

Diagnosis requires an appropriate clinical assessment; check the practitioner’s qualifications and scope of practice.

Is EMDR always recommended?

No. Treatment choices depend on assessment, individual needs and the practitioner’s specialist training.

Will I have to discuss traumatic memories straight away?

No. You should be able to discuss readiness, consent, pacing and treatment options.

Can online sessions be appropriate?

They may be suitable for some people where privacy, safety and clinical needs can be managed.

What if I have other mental health difficulties?

A clinician can consider overlapping difficulties and coordinate care or refer onwards when needed.

How do I find specialist support?

Ask about relevant trauma training, clinical experience, supervision and safeguarding procedures.
