Understanding ptsd
Post-traumatic stress disorder can develop after traumatic experiences. Symptoms may include re-experiencing, avoidance, feeling under threat and changes in mood or beliefs.
Signs and everyday experiences
Flashbacks, nightmares, strong reactions to reminders, irritability, detachment and difficulties concentrating can affect daily life.
What can contribute?
Not everyone exposed to trauma develops PTSD. Symptoms, duration and functional impact are assessed by a qualified professional.
How talking therapy may help
For adults with PTSD, NICE recommends specific trauma-focused psychological treatments such as trauma-focused CBT and EMDR in appropriate circumstances. General supportive counselling is not the same as specialist PTSD treatment.
What might sessions involve?
A person avoiding a route associated with an accident may work with a trained clinician on safety, understanding triggers and an appropriate treatment plan.
Choosing the right support
Veyro lets you compare independent therapists who list PTSD as a specialism. Check each profile for training, experience, approach, availability and fees. A specialism label alone does not confirm training in every specialist treatment.
If you are at immediate risk of harming yourself or someone else, seek urgent help; do not wait for a routine appointment.

Frequently asked questions
Is PTSD the same as trauma?
No. Trauma refers to an experience or its impact; PTSD is a specific diagnosis based on symptoms and assessment.
Can PTSD begin months later?
Symptoms can emerge or become more apparent after some time. Seek assessment if they persist or impair daily life.
What is trauma-focused CBT?
It is a structured psychological treatment addressing trauma-related memories, beliefs and avoidance.
Is EMDR recommended for PTSD?
NICE recommends EMDR for some adults with PTSD, depending on circumstances and assessment.
Will I need to retell my experience?
Specialist treatment may involve working with memories, but the clinician should explain the process and obtain consent.
Can PTSD therapy be online?
It may be suitable for some people when safety, privacy and specialist treatment needs can be met.
How do I find an appropriately trained therapist?
Check experience with PTSD, training in recommended therapies, professional registration and safeguarding procedures.
