Online Therapy for Depression
Depression can affect much more than mood. You may feel exhausted, disconnected, hopeless or unable to enjoy things that once mattered. Online therapy offers a confidential space to talk about what you are experiencing and consider support that suits your needs.

What is depression?
Everyone has low days. Depression is different from a temporary dip in mood: symptoms can persist and affect relationships, work, sleep and everyday activities. Some people feel sad; others notice numbness, irritability or a loss of interest. A qualified healthcare professional can assess symptoms and discuss whether they meet criteria for a depressive disorder.
You do not have to wait until things feel unbearable before asking for help.
Signs and experiences of depression
- Low mood, emptiness or loss of enjoyment
- Feeling unusually tired or slowed down
- Changes in sleep, appetite or concentration
- Withdrawing from people or activities
- Feeling guilty, worthless or hopeless
- Finding routine tasks unusually difficult
Symptoms vary, and some physical or mood changes have other causes. Speak to a GP if you are unsure what is happening.
What can contribute to depression?
Depression may arise from a combination of life events, relationships, ongoing stress, health conditions and other factors. Sometimes there is no obvious trigger. Experiencing depression does not mean you have failed or simply need to think more positively.
How can therapy help with depression?
A therapist can help you make sense of your experiences, identify patterns that may be maintaining low mood and work towards changes that feel achievable. Depending on your needs, approaches may include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), behavioural activation, counselling or other evidence-based psychological treatments. For adults, NICE guideline NG222 recommends making treatment choices collaboratively, taking account of severity, preferences and previous experience. Medication may also be discussed with a GP where appropriate.
For example, if depression has led you to stop seeing friends, therapy might help you plan one manageable reconnection without treating a difficult day as failure. Progress is rarely linear and outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
What happens in an online depression therapy session?
Your therapist may ask how your mood has changed, what daily life looks like and what you want help with. You can work together to decide priorities and review how sessions are going. You do not need to have all the answers at the first appointment. Online sessions can be convenient, provided you have somewhere private to talk.
Finding the right therapist
Veyro lets you compare independent therapists who list depression among their areas of expertise. Read about their training, approaches, prices and availability. Ask how they work with depression and whether their experience fits what you are looking for. A listed specialism alone does not establish competence in every recommended treatment.
When to seek additional help
If symptoms are affecting your everyday life, your GP can discuss assessment and treatment options. The NHS depression overview explains common symptoms and where to get help. If you are at immediate risk of harming yourself, call 999 or attend A&E; Veyro is not an emergency service. For urgent mental health help that is not an immediate emergency, use NHS 111 and select the mental health option in England.

Frequently asked questions
How is depression different from feeling sad?
Sadness is a normal emotion. Depression can involve persistent changes in mood, enjoyment, energy and functioning. A healthcare professional can assess whether symptoms indicate a depressive disorder.
Can online therapy help with depression?
Online therapy can be an option for some people with depression. The appropriate level and type of support depends on symptoms, preferences and safety needs.
What treatments are recommended for depression?
NICE recommends choosing treatment collaboratively according to individual needs and depression severity. Psychological options include CBT and behavioural activation, among others. See NICE guideline NG222.
Do I need a diagnosis before booking therapy?
No. You can seek support for low mood without a diagnosis. A GP can assess symptoms and discuss treatment choices if you would like medical advice.
Will I have to talk about difficult experiences straight away?
You can discuss pace and boundaries with your therapist. They may ask about your current difficulties and history, but should explain their approach and work collaboratively.
How long does therapy for depression take?
There is no universal number of sessions. The length depends on your needs, chosen treatment, progress and any additional support you may require.
What if I feel unsafe or have thoughts of suicide?
If there is immediate danger, call 999 or go to A&E. For urgent mental health support in England, call NHS 111 and select the mental health option. Tell your GP or another healthcare professional about these thoughts; Veyro is not a crisis service.
