Understanding Menopause
Perimenopause and menopause are life stages associated with changes in ovarian hormone levels. Experiences differ, and not every emotional difficulty is caused by hormones.
Signs and everyday experiences
Some people notice sleep disruption, irritability, anxiety, low mood, concentration changes or changes in self-image. Symptoms should be assessed in context.
What can contribute?
Physical symptoms, caregiving, work pressures and previous mental health experiences can interact.
How talking therapy may help
Therapy, including CBT-based approaches in appropriate circumstances, may help with coping, sleep and emotional wellbeing. A GP or menopause specialist can discuss medical assessment and treatment such as HRT where suitable.
What might sessions involve?
Someone whose sleep is disrupted by night sweats might work on practical coping while also discussing physical symptoms with their GP.
Choosing the right support
On Veyro you can compare independent therapists who list Menopause as a specialism. Check their experience, training, approach, availability and fees. A specialism badge does not establish competence in every specialist intervention.
Do not assume new or severe symptoms are simply menopause. Seek medical advice for concerning physical or mental health changes.
