What executive functioning means day to day
Executive functioning includes skills involved in planning, starting, switching and organising tasks, holding information in mind and managing impulses. Difficulties can appear with ADHD, stress, low mood, sleep problems or other circumstances. They do not, by themselves, establish a diagnosis.
A bill that stays unopened
You may want to pay a bill yet keep putting it off. Part of the problem might be remembering, another part starting, and another coping with the anxiety it brings. A reminder may solve one piece while leaving the emotional barrier untouched. Exploring the different pieces can make support more useful.
Therapy, coaching and practical tools
Therapy may help with shame, avoidance, overwhelm or the impact on relationships. Coaching or occupational support may focus more directly on systems, routines and task strategies. Ask what the practitioner can actually help you do and whether they have experience with your circumstances.
Working without self-blame
A useful approach avoids treating difficulty starting a task as laziness. You can discuss realistic expectations, accommodations and how to review what does not work. If problems are new, severe or affecting health and safety, a GP can help consider possible underlying causes.
Choosing an independent therapist
Read each therapist’s profile and ask about relevant experience, professional registration, confidentiality, online session arrangements and fees. A listed specialism is not a guarantee of particular clinical training or suitability. You can ask questions before booking, and the therapist should explain when a different service may be more appropriate.
Related support and urgent help

For urgent medical help that is not an emergency, contact your GP or local urgent-care service. In Northern Ireland, contact your GP out-of-hours service when your surgery is closed.

Frequently asked questions
What are executive functions?
They include planning, organisation, working memory and task initiation.
Is executive dysfunction the same as ADHD?
No. Similar difficulties can have different causes.
Can stress affect planning?
Yes. Stress and poor sleep can make everyday tasks harder.
Can therapy help with procrastination?
Therapy may help with overwhelm and patterns of avoidance; practical supports may also help.
Would coaching or therapy suit me better?
Coaching often focuses on practical systems and routines; therapy may explore shame, avoidance, overwhelm or relationships. Ask each provider what they can help with and what relevant training they have.
Do I need a diagnosis?
Not always to seek general support.
When should I speak to my GP?
If difficulties are persistent, worsening or significantly affecting daily life.
