Understanding burnout

Burnout describes a pattern associated with chronic workplace stress; it is not a diagnosis of depression or a catch-all term for exhaustion.

Signs and everyday experiences

You may feel depleted before the working day begins, increasingly cynical about work, less effective than usual, or unable to switch off. Symptoms vary, and difficulties outside work can overlap.

What can contribute?

Heavy workloads, limited control, conflicting demands, poor support and unclear boundaries can all play a part. The problem is not necessarily a lack of resilience.

How talking therapy may help

A therapist can help you identify pressures, notice unhelpful patterns such as overcommitting, and practise conversations about boundaries. Support should not imply that therapy alone can fix unsafe or unreasonable working conditions.

A practical example

For example, you might map the tasks that routinely spill into evenings, practise requesting priorities from a manager and agree how to assess whether changes help.

Choosing support and staying safe

Persistent exhaustion, changes in sleep or mood, or physical symptoms deserve consideration by a GP, especially if they are new or worsening. If workplace conditions are harmful, practical or organisational action may also be necessary.

Frequently asked questions

Is burnout the same as depression?

No. Burnout is associated with chronic workplace stress, while depression can affect many parts of life. They can overlap, so seek a professional assessment if you are unsure.

Can therapy help if my workload is the problem?

Therapy may help with boundaries, coping and decision-making, but it cannot replace workplace changes where demands are unreasonable.

Do I need to leave my job?

Not necessarily. Options depend on your health, circumstances and whether meaningful changes at work are possible.

What if I cannot switch off after work?

You can explore what keeps work on your mind and test realistic boundaries and recovery routines without blaming yourself for the pressure.

Is burnout a medical diagnosis?

Burnout is not classified as a medical condition in itself. A GP can assess symptoms that may have other explanations.

Can burnout affect sleep?

Yes, prolonged stress may affect sleep, although persistent sleep problems can have other causes. See our sleep problems page.
