Living with ongoing symptoms

Long COVID can involve fatigue, breathlessness, cognitive difficulties and fluctuating capacity. The experience differs between people, and symptoms may affect everyday decisions as much as major plans.

Emotional support without dismissal

Counselling may help with uncertainty, grief for lost routines, isolation or the pressure of explaining invisible symptoms. It does not diagnose Long COVID or treat the underlying physical condition.

Adapting sessions to your energy

If fatigue or concentration makes appointments difficult, ask about shorter sessions, breaks, written summaries or rescheduling when symptoms flare. The pace of therapy should take your energy and accessibility needs seriously.

Working alongside medical care

Continue to discuss physical symptoms and changes with your GP or relevant clinical team. If symptoms suddenly worsen or you develop urgent medical concerns, seek appropriate medical help rather than relying on a routine therapy appointment.

Finding a therapist and next steps

Compare independent therapists’ profiles, relevant experience, session formats and fees before booking. You can ask about suitability and confidentiality in an initial conversation. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 999. For urgent non-emergency medical concerns, contact your GP or local urgent-care service; in Northern Ireland, use your GP out-of-hours service when your surgery is closed. For topic-specific guidance, see the relevant NHS information.
