Understanding ocd
Obsessive-compulsive disorder involves unwanted intrusive thoughts, images or urges and compulsions intended to reduce distress or prevent a feared outcome. Compulsions may be mental rather than visible.
Signs and everyday experiences
Repeated checking, washing, seeking reassurance, counting, mental reviewing or avoidance may interfere with work, relationships and daily routines.
What can contribute?
OCD is not a preference for tidiness. Stress can intensify symptoms, but the condition is more complex than everyday worry.
How talking therapy may help
CBT with exposure and response prevention (ERP) is a recommended psychological treatment for OCD. ERP involves carefully planned work with feared situations while reducing compulsions, supported by a suitably trained clinician.
What might sessions involve?
Someone who repeatedly checks an appliance might collaboratively plan graded exercises rather than being told simply to stop checking.
Choosing the right support
Veyro lets you compare independent therapists who list OCD as a specialism. Check each profile for training, experience, approach, availability and fees. A specialism label alone does not confirm training in every specialist treatment.
Intrusive thoughts do not mean a person intends to act on them. Seek specialist assessment for severe or impairing symptoms.

Frequently asked questions
Are intrusive thoughts the same as intentions?
No. Unwanted intrusive thoughts are common in OCD and do not in themselves indicate intention.
Can compulsions happen only in my mind?
Yes. Mental checking, repeating phrases or reviewing memories can be compulsions.
What is ERP?
Exposure and response prevention is a form of CBT that gradually addresses feared triggers while reducing rituals.
Will a therapist make me face my worst fear immediately?
ERP should be collaborative and graded, with assessment and consent.
Can reassurance make OCD worse?
Repeated reassurance can become part of a compulsion cycle, even when it brings brief relief.
Does online therapy work for OCD?
Online CBT with ERP may be suitable for some people; check the clinician’s specific training.
Should I seek a diagnosis?
A GP or qualified mental health professional can assess symptoms and discuss appropriate treatment options.
