Understanding insomnia
Insomnia involves ongoing problems with sleep despite an opportunity to sleep, often with daytime effects. It can be short-term or persistent.
Signs and everyday experiences
Long periods awake at night, waking too early, worry about sleep and daytime fatigue are common experiences.
What can contribute?
Stress, irregular schedules, pain, medication and other health conditions may contribute. Sleep apnoea and other sleep disorders need appropriate assessment.
How talking therapy may help
CBT for insomnia (CBT-I) is a structured first-line treatment for chronic insomnia in many guidelines. General counselling may help with stress but is not the same as CBT-I.
What might sessions involve?
Someone lying awake clock-watching may work with a suitably trained practitioner on the habits and expectations that keep the sleep problem going.
Choosing the right support
Veyro lets you compare independent therapists who list Insomnia as a specialism. Check each profile for training, experience, approach, availability and fees. A specialism label alone does not confirm training in every specialist treatment.
Seek medical advice for severe sleepiness, possible sleep apnoea or persistent symptoms. Do not drive when sleepy.

Frequently asked questions

No. Occasional poor sleep is common; insomnia describes a more persistent difficulty that can affect daytime functioning.
What is CBT-I?
CBT for insomnia is a structured treatment addressing sleep-related behaviours and beliefs.
Is general talking therapy the same as CBT-I?
No. Ask whether the practitioner has specific CBT-I training.
Can stress make insomnia worse?
Yes, stress and worry can affect sleep, although other medical or environmental causes may also contribute.
Should I take sleeping tablets?
Medication decisions should be discussed with a GP or prescriber.
Can I get insomnia support online?
Some CBT-I and psychological support can be delivered online where suitable.
When should I seek medical advice?
If symptoms persist, you suspect another sleep disorder or daytime sleepiness creates a safety risk.
