Counselling during and after IVF
Waiting for a result, deciding whom to tell, managing appointments or facing another cycle can bring different pressures. Some people feel hopeful and anxious at the same time; others experience exhaustion, grief or numbness. Counselling can help you plan support around those moments without promising any effect on treatment outcomes.
Before, between and after cycles
You may want to talk through how you and a partner make decisions, what information you share with family or how to manage work while undergoing treatment. After an unsuccessful cycle, support may involve grief and uncertainty; after a successful cycle, worries do not necessarily disappear. The right conversation depends on your experience.
Wellbeing is not a success-rate strategy
Counselling is offered for your wellbeing, not to increase the chance of pregnancy. There is no good evidence that feeling stressed makes fertility treatment less likely to succeed. Medical questions about IVF protocols, risks or chances of success belong with your fertility clinic. See the HFEA guidance on emotional support.
Choosing a counsellor
Ask about relevant IVF and fertility experience, confidentiality, individual or partner appointments and support after a cycle ends. Some clinics provide or arrange specialist counselling; you can ask what is available before seeking additional independent support.
Choosing an independent therapist
Read each therapist’s profile and ask about relevant experience, professional registration, confidentiality, online session arrangements and fees. A listed specialism is not a guarantee of particular clinical training or suitability. You can ask questions before booking, and the therapist should explain when a different service may be more appropriate.

For urgent medical help that is not an emergency, contact your GP or local urgent-care service. In Northern Ireland, contact your GP out-of-hours service when your surgery is closed.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have therapy during IVF?
Yes. Emotional support can be sought before, during or after treatment.
Does therapy increase IVF success rates?
Counselling supports your wellbeing. It should not be presented as improving the chance of pregnancy; ask your fertility clinic about treatment outcomes.
Can counselling help after an unsuccessful cycle?
It may help you process disappointment and consider next steps.
Can my partner attend?
Some therapists offer couples sessions; check suitability.
What about donor conception?
Counselling can offer space to explore feelings and decisions around donor conception.
How can counselling help if my partner and I disagree about continuing IVF?
IVF can bring difficult decisions, particularly when partners have different feelings about continuing treatment, taking a break or stopping altogether. Counselling can provide a supportive space to explore those feelings, communicate openly and understand each other's perspectives without pressure to reach a particular decision. You can attend individually or together, depending on the therapist's experience and the support you need.
Where should I ask about medical risks?
Your fertility clinic or another appropriately qualified clinician.
