Online Therapy for Phobias

A strong fear of flying, needles, animals or another situation can make everyday choices feel restricted. Therapy may help you understand the fear and consider gradual, supported ways to respond.

What is a phobia?

A phobia is an intense fear of a particular object, activity or situation that can feel out of proportion to the actual danger and lead to avoidance. Some fears are understandable and do not meet the threshold for a phobia.

How might a phobia affect life?

Someone might avoid medical appointments because of needles, turn down travel because of flying, or plan routes to avoid dogs. Anticipatory worry can be as disruptive as encountering the feared situation itself.

Why can avoidance keep fears going?

Avoiding a feared situation often reduces anxiety in the moment. Over time, it may leave fewer opportunities to learn that the situation can be managed. This does not mean anyone should be forced into exposure.

What treatments can help?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), often including carefully planned exposure-based work, is commonly used for specific phobias. The therapist should explain the rationale, discuss safety and agree a pace with you. See NHS information on phobia treatment.

What happens in online therapy?

You may identify triggers, explore what you predict will happen and practise coping with anxiety. Depending on the fear, some practical exercises may require planning outside video sessions. A therapist should explain what can and cannot be done safely online.

What if my fear relates to a genuine risk?

Therapy should not encourage ignoring real hazards. A therapist can help distinguish sensible precautions from avoidance that is limiting your life, taking your circumstances and health into account.

How do I choose a therapist?

Ask about experience with your particular phobia and with exposure-based CBT if that is what you are seeking. You can compare independent therapists on Veyro, ask about their relevant training and approach, and agree goals together. Online therapy may be convenient, but it is not the right option for every person or situation.

Frequently asked questions

Are phobias the same as ordinary fears?

Not necessarily. Phobias tend to involve intense distress or avoidance that interferes with everyday life.

Will I be made to face my fear immediately?

No. Any exposure-based work should be explained and planned collaboratively; you should be able to discuss concerns and consent.

Can online therapy help with a fear of flying?

It may help with anticipatory anxiety and planning, though some practical steps may need to happen outside sessions.

Is a phobia a panic disorder?

No. Panic attacks can occur during a phobic situation, but panic disorder is a different condition. Read about panic attacks.

Does every phobia need therapy?

Not necessarily. Support may be worth exploring when fear causes significant distress or restricts important activities.

What if I have a medical condition?

Tell your therapist about relevant health conditions and seek medical advice where needed, particularly before any physical exercises.

Where can I read more?

The NHS phobias overview explains symptoms and support options.
